Every speaker lies to you. Some flatter the bass, some cut it. Some boost the high end, some roll it off. Your headphones are telling you a different story to your monitors, and your car is telling you something else entirely. That's normal. The question is how to deal with it.
Why speakers sound different
Every speaker has a frequency response curve. Some are flat, meaning they reproduce audio accurately across the frequency spectrum. Most are not. Consumer headphones boost the bass and the highs because it sounds more exciting. Car stereos have their own EQ applied. Phone speakers can't reproduce anything below about 200Hz.
On top of that, the room you're listening in changes everything. A bedroom with hard walls and no treatment will have bass build-up in the corners and nulls in certain spots. What you hear at your desk might be completely different two metres to the left.
Room acoustics are the silent problem
This is the one most producers underestimate. Your room is colouring everything you hear. If your listening position has a bass peak at 80Hz, you'll mix with less bass because your room is adding it. When you play that mix on a flat system, the bass is gone.
Professional mastering rooms are acoustically treated to be as flat and neutral as possible. That's a huge part of what you're paying for when you hire a mastering engineer. It's not just the person. It's the environment they're working in.
My monitoring setup and why I use three systems
I work on PMC MB2-XBD main monitors, Yamaha NS10s, and Audeze MM-500 headphones. Three different perspectives on the same audio.
The PMCs are the main system. They're incredibly detailed and flat across the full frequency range, down to very low sub frequencies. They show me exactly what's in the track. Most of my critical decisions happen here.
The NS10s are the reality check. They're mid-focused and unforgiving. If something sounds good on NS10s, it'll translate to most consumer systems. If the vocal is buried on NS10s, it's buried everywhere.
The Audeze headphones are the microscope. I use them for checking details, stereo imaging, and catching small issues that might get lost in the room. They also let me hear without any room influence at all.
Between those three systems, I've got a very clear picture of how the track will translate across playback environments.
Reference tracks solve most of this
If you're mixing or mastering and your room isn't perfect, reference tracks are your safety net. Pull up a professionally mastered track in your genre, play it on your system, and match the tonal balance. If the reference sounds bass-heavy on your system, your room is probably cutting bass. Adjust accordingly.
Don't use references just once. Check against them throughout the session. Your ears drift. The reference resets you.
How to check translation
- —Listen on your studio monitors at moderate volume
- —Switch to headphones and check the bass balance and stereo image
- —Play it in your car. The car is brutal for exposing frequency balance issues
- —Play it on a phone speaker. You should still hear the track's energy even without bass
- —Play it on a Bluetooth speaker. These are what most casual listeners use
- —If the track sounds consistently good across all of these, it translates
What a mastering engineer can do about this
My job is to make your track sound good everywhere, not just on one system. That's what the treated room and multiple monitoring systems are for. Every decision I make is checked across systems. If something sounds great on the PMCs but falls apart on the NS10s, I know there's a problem.
When a track comes in that's been mixed in a bad room, I can usually tell immediately. Too much bass, not enough bass, harsh high end, scooped mids. These are all signs that the producer was hearing something different to what's actually in the file. I correct for that.
