Most of the tracks I master go straight to streaming. Spotify, Apple Music, Beatport. But vinyl is having a proper resurgence, and when it comes up, the process is genuinely different. Not just quieter. Different.
Why vinyl needs a different master
A vinyl master has physical constraints that a digital master doesn't. The cutting lathe moves a needle through a groove, and that groove has limits. Too much bass energy and the groove gets too wide, which means fewer minutes per side. Too much stereo information in the low end and the needle can skip. Too much high-frequency energy and you get distortion.
None of that applies to a WAV file on Spotify. Digital is just numbers. You can push it harder, wider, louder. Vinyl is a physical medium with physical rules.
Loudness is the obvious one
A vinyl master is quieter than a digital master. It has to be. If you push the level too hard, the cutting engineer will struggle and the playback will distort. That's not a bad thing. Vinyl sounds musical because it breathes. The dynamics are preserved because you can't squash them out.
For streaming, I'll push the track to where it sounds its best, which on a dance track might be -8 to -6 LUFS. For vinyl, I'm pulling that back significantly. The cutting engineer needs room to work.
Bass management matters a lot
This is the big one. Stereo bass is a problem on vinyl. Wide low-end information causes the groove to move in ways that the needle can't track reliably. So for a vinyl master, the low end needs to be mono, usually below 150Hz or so depending on the material.
On a digital master I tend to mono below 80Hz. For vinyl, that threshold moves up. It's a compromise, but it's a necessary one. If you don't do it, the pressing plant will send it back or the record will skip.
EQ adjustments for the format
Vinyl playback uses the RIAA curve, which cuts bass and boosts treble during cutting, then reverses it on playback. The result is that certain frequency ranges respond differently to what you're used to hearing on digital. A harsh high end on digital might be fine on vinyl. A bass-heavy mix might need more low-end control than usual.
I also tend to do a slight boost on the high shelf for vinyl. The cutting process tends to dull the track a touch, so a gentle lift up top compensates for that. It's subtle, but it matters.
When you need a separate vinyl master
If you're pressing vinyl, you need a vinyl-specific master. Full stop. Sending your streaming master to a cutting house and hoping for the best is a recipe for problems. The levels are wrong, the bass might be too wide, the transients might be too aggressive.
If you're only releasing digitally, you don't need a vinyl master. Obvious, but worth saying because I've had people ask for a vinyl master with no plans to press.
The resurgence is real
Vinyl sales have been climbing for years. Labels are pressing again. Limited runs, coloured vinyl, collector editions. It's not a nostalgia gimmick anymore. Producers are actively planning vinyl into their release strategy.
If you're thinking about pressing, mention it before the mastering session. I'll do the vinyl master alongside the digital one. It's much easier to do both in the same session than to come back later and rework it.
