Different formats have different requirements. A master optimised for Spotify isn't necessarily right for vinyl, and a vinyl master won't hit hard enough in a club. Here's what each format actually needs and when you need separate versions.
Streaming: the default
Most releases today are streaming-first. Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, YouTube. The master needs to sound good on every playback system from earbuds to car speakers to club PA systems playing Spotify.
Streaming platforms normalise loudness, so the goal isn't maximum volume. It's the best balance of loudness, dynamics, and tonal quality. For dance music, that usually means pushing harder than -14 LUFS because a well-mastered loud track still sounds better after normalisation than a quiet one.
Club: loudness still wins
If your track is going to be played by DJs from Beatport or on USB, there's no normalisation. A louder track hits harder in the mix. Period.
Club masters are pushed harder. The low end needs to be solid and mono below 80Hz so it translates on large systems. The overall level sits higher, usually -6 to -8 LUFS for dance music. The limiter works harder, but the skill is in pushing it without losing the punch and dynamics that make the track work on a big system.
A lot of the time, the streaming master and the club master are the same file. If I've mastered a track well for streaming at -9 LUFS, it's already going to perform well in a club. It's only when labels specifically want maximum loudness for DJ tools or promo copies that I'll do a separate, harder-pushed version.
Vinyl: physical limitations
Vinyl has real constraints. The cutting lathe has groove width limitations, which means you can't go as loud. Stereo bass causes tracking problems, so everything below about 150Hz needs to be mono. Excessive high-frequency energy causes distortion during cutting.
A vinyl master is quieter, more dynamic, and has tighter bass management than a digital master. It's not a worse version. It's a different version optimised for a different medium. Vinyl sounds great because those constraints force you to preserve dynamics and clarity.
When you need separate masters
If you're releasing on streaming only, one master covers everything. If you're pressing vinyl, you need a separate vinyl master. No exceptions. Your streaming master sent to a cutting house will cause problems.
If a label wants a specific club-loud version alongside the streaming release, that's a separate master too. But as I said, most of the time the streaming master works fine for club use.
Cost implications
Each format-specific master is essentially a separate pass. A vinyl master alongside a digital master means more time and more cost. But if you mention it before the session, I can set up for both at once, which is more efficient than coming back later.
For most producers releasing on streaming and Beatport, one master does the job. Vinyl adds cost. Multiple format-specific masters add cost. Plan ahead and budget for it if you know you need it.
