Finding a Mastering Engineer in the Netherlands: What to Know

Sam Wills·Wired Masters, London·6 min read

The Netherlands punches above its weight in electronic music. Amsterdam is a global hub for dance music, Rotterdam has its own distinct scene, and Dutch labels are among the most respected in the world. Here's what matters when choosing a mastering engineer.

The Dutch electronic music scene

Amsterdam Dance Event is the biggest electronic music conference on the planet. That tells you something about how seriously the Netherlands takes this music. Dutch labels span every corner of electronic music — from the deep house of Defected's Amsterdam arm to the harder sounds coming out of Rotterdam.

Dutch producers tend to be technically strong. The production quality coming out of the Netherlands is consistently high, which means the mastering has to match. A poorly mastered track will stick out on a playlist full of Dutch productions.

What Dutch releases demand

The Dutch market values clean, punchy masters. There's less tolerance for over-compressed, squashed masters than you might find in some other markets. Dutch DJs and listeners expect dynamic range, clarity, and low-end that works on both club systems and headphones.

This is particularly true for house and techno releases. The kick needs to punch without distorting, the bass needs to be tight without being thin, and the overall master needs to feel musical rather than just loud.

Working remotely with a UK mastering engineer

London and Amsterdam are close enough that files can travel instantly. Sam works with Dutch artists and labels regularly — the workflow is the same as any other remote mastering project. Files in, master back, revisions until it's right.

The advantage of working with a London-based engineer who specialises in dance music is access to monitoring environments built specifically for this genre. Wired Masters' rooms are designed around low-end accuracy, which is exactly what dance music mastering demands.
